For his debut solo exhibition, British Artist Alistair Canvin presents Do Not Over Inflate, a playful reflection of reminiscence and notion, via a surreal photo-real sequence of authentic work. For artists, nostalgia gives a wealth of emotive materials, from Norman Rockwell’s idealisation of a less complicated time, to Jeff Koons love of shopper tradition and capitalist icons. For Alistair Canvin, this time travelling portal gives a large number of experiences to subvert. From playful objects, to his exact selection of color, Canvin disturbs the levity of childhood; with the disclaimers of maturity.
The sequence seems joyous, stuffed with color and paying homage to summer season holidays and breaks away, nevertheless a more in-depth look; reveals delicate undercurrents of worry. Inflatable animals and seaside balls characteristic in vivid and florescent colors, however are proven in states of disuse; deflated, burned or compressed. Sq. blue tiles bend and wave beneath clear water whereas the floor holds a buoyant rescue vest. Absurd Installations disturb the bodily house as a chandelier made with arm bands hangs from the ceiling, whereas resin puddles pool beneath the works. Regardless of our shut proximity, nothing seems match for goal, and whereas acquainted; neither operate of play or security is being realised.
Past topic, color is a crucial variable, with major hues – recalling the reminiscence of playgrounds or toys; set in opposition to practical secondary palettes – designed to warn or sign rescue. For a diptych of satirical nonetheless life’s, the artist performs with color and context by shifting the discussion board of water from pool to ocean. Elevating the factitious color of Security Orange beside a contrasting sea of blue, unfolds a parody of consideration searching for behaviour. Inflating mundane and plastic particulars, beside the cautionary textual content… ‘don’t over inflate’.
The exhibition explores identification and fragility via a spectrum of color and reminiscence. From previous to current, the artist creates a sensory atmosphere for audiences to discover, with the chance for infinite narratives to happen via every private expertise. —Charlotte Pyatt
