Students, artists, curators, activists, and historians will convene at Syracuse College in October to think about the function of monuments and their contested place in up to date society.
Don’t miss “Monumental Concerns”, a symposium hosted by Syracuse College artist-in-residence Carrie Mae Weems on Saturday, October 7, with a gap reception and presentation that includes Hank Willis Thomas on Friday, October 6. Panelists will discover how monuments can commemorate difficult histories and form dominant narratives on nationwide and native ranges.
How can we dialogue about these usually controversial points and pretty handle a large number of views? To what extent can we invite opposition to discussions of monument removing or displacement? When and the way do these debates spill over into racial violence and what can we do to handle this actuality? How can we acknowledge the emotional and nationalistic function that monuments usually play whereas advocating for extra inclusive historic framing? The symposium, which is free and open to the general public, will happen at Syracuse University’s campus in Syracuse, New York.
